What dual fuel changes
The heat pump provides cooling and electric heating. The furnace remains available for gas heat, and its blower moves air through the ducts. Controls decide which heating source operates.
What all electric changes
An air handler takes the place of the gas furnace. The design needs to account for winter heating demand and any electric backup heat. Electrical capacity must be checked before choosing the equipment.
The gas bill is a separate decision
Replacing a furnace does not remove gas service if the water heater, range or another appliance still uses it. Include those appliances when planning a complete transition away from gas.
